In addition to Scottburgh, Park Rynie , Kelso and Pennington are located in the parish of uMdoni, on the central South Coast .

economy

Scottburgh is the economic center of uMdonis. The most important areas are tourism and agriculture. The N2 offers the city a connection to the metropolitan municipality eThekwini and to the south. There is also a rail link in Scottburgh.

Scottburgh is primarily a tourist area with opportunities for bathing in the sea and in pools and other sports facilities. There are also facilities for campers and caravan owners.

There are many farmers who grow sugar cane and, accordingly, sugar processors who buy up the cane . Sugar has been the basis of the industry that grew there since the mid-19th century and still plays an important economic role today.

history

The area around Scottburgh is deeply anchored in the Zulu culture. King Shaka has already been here and was amazed at the variety of birds. He wondered how the many birds could find their own nests again and therefore called the river on which today's city is built, Mpanbonyoni , which means something like "bird confounder". A plaque at the source of the river commemorates the incident.

When Scottburgh was founded around 1860, it was the first city to be built south of Durban. The name was inspired by the Lieutenant Governor of Natal , Sir John Scott. At the turn of the century there was a well-running harbor in the shallow Davenport Bay , which was mainly used by the sugar producers. However, he couldn't hold his own against the railroad. Eventually the operating company of the port became insolvent.

An important role in the region was played by the Byrne settlers from the United Kingdom , who came to the country from 1850. Two families in particular have left their legacy; on the one hand Joseph and Fanny Landers, after whom the Landersriff was named, and on the other hand the Crooke brothers, who started the successful sugar tradition. Crookes Brothers is one of the oldest family businesses on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange .
