Vulamehlo ( English Vulamehlo Local Municipality ) was a municipality in the South African district of Ugu , KwaZulu-Natal province . The administrative seat of the parish was Scottburgh . WT Dube was the last mayor. The ANC last provided the majority in the local council.

The name of the community comes from the isiZulu term for 'open your eyes'. In 2011 the community had 77,403 inhabitants, almost 99 percent of whom were black. It covered an area of 960 square kilometers.

In 2016, the community was divided into the metropolitan community eThekwini and the local community uMdoni .

geography

Vulamehlo was south of eThekwini. The community bordered on uMdoni to the east, Mkhambathini and Richmond to the north, and Ubuhlebezwe to the west .

The main places in the parish were Jolivet , Dududu , Kenterton , Mkhunya , Braemar and Mfume .

economy

The community was in a rural area. Large parts of the land were under the supervision of traditional rulers. The rural structures in the municipality with low population density and scattered settlements resulted in high costs for improving the infrastructure . Other problems in the community were high unemployment, poverty and negative economic growth.

Agriculture

In Vulamehlo there were farms on which sugar cane and timber are grown on a small scale. The community's strategies for improving the economic situation were aimed at growing more diverse products. In addition, complex irrigation systems should be built and new farmers supported.

tourism

Much of the tourist activity in the region took place outside the municipality as Vulamehlo was not on the coast. In order to still benefit from tourism, there were projects to set up markets for local art and craft products. Another goal were tours that were intended to bring culturally interested people closer to the traditional rural way of life.
