Hardwell & Friends EP Vol. 3 is the third volume in an EP series by Dutch DJ and producer Hardwell . The so-called "Volume 3" was released on January 26th, 2018 via the music label " Revealed Recordings ". Hardwell is indicated as the main interpreter, the addition of "Friends" includes a number of collaboration partners.

background

Hardwell announced the first two parts of the Hardwell - & - Friends EPs on June 10, 2017 during an interview at Ultra Singapore . In another interview, Hardwell also confirmed the work on a third volume. Hardwell announced during his appearance at the ADE's Revealed Night that a release was being targeted.

At the beginning of 2018, Hardwell announced that he had planned something special for the 350th episode of his " Hardwell-On-Air " podcast. The day before it was broadcast, he published the EP cover, on which all features were shown. At this point in time these were made unrecognizable. He, Jewelz & Sparks and Sick Individuals premiered the studio versions of all tracks in the Hardwell On Air episode . A statement from the respective collaboration partner was recorded for each song.

Singles

Before the EP was released, Hardwell released the entire tracklist as singles on Spotify and iTunes, among others . The individual covers consist of press photos of the artists. Only Jantine Annika Heij cannot be seen on the artwork of Take Us Down (Feeding Our Hunger) .

  • The Underground marked the start of the EP with a release on January 22nd, 2018. After the Australian DJ and producer Timmy Trumpet increasingly turned to psytrance at the end of 2016, there was also a collaboration between Hardwell and the Australian. The track premiered at Ultra Europe, while the collaboration was confirmed at the ADE's Revealed Night. The style of the song is described as a crossover between psytrance and big room.
  • Woest was released as the second single on January 23, 2018. The second official collaboration with the Dutch producer Quintino after Baldadig , presented the latter at Fri-YAY! Launch of the Beat Festival in November 2017. Woest is also based on a big room, but does not act as a follow-up like their Mi-gente remix.
  • Get Low is the third release on January 24th, 2018. The track was created in collaboration with the Dutch DJ duo Sick Individuals, who have been active on their record label "Revealed Recordings" since 2013. At Ultra Europe 2017, Hardwell brought the duo on stage for the song's premiere. There they played the song as a mash-up with its remix for Mi gente . Get Low is based on a mixture of big room and dancehall.
  • Safari was released the following day, January 25, 2018. Behind the single is a collaboration with the German DJ duo Jewelz & Sparks . Jewelz & Sparks were already active on their label with the song Pharao in 2014 , until they received a contract on "Revealed" in 2016 with their song Crank . Hardwell revised the song for a single re-release. At the Biggest Guestlist Festival 2017 he finally premiered a collaboration with the German producers. After the premiere, the production was initially suspected as a collaboration between Jewelz & Sparks and the Sick Individuals, until they announced on Hardwell's thirtieth birthday on Twitter that it was a collaboration.
  • Take Us Down (Feeding Our Hunger) was released on January 26th, 2018 as the last single. After Hardwell and Dr Phunk released an EP consisting of Dr Phunk remixes of Hardwell songs at the end of 2016, a first collaboration took place in 2017. This was included in the second volume of Hardwell & Friends EPs in 2017 under the title Here Once Again . Unlike the Hardstyle forerunner, the second collaboration is based on a big room pattern with minor influences from Dr Phunk's style. The song premiered at Ultra Europe and has since been played permanently as a mash-up with Run Wild . In the 350th episode of Hardwell's "Hardwell-On-Air" he played the final version with the official vocals for the first time. The Dutch singer-songwriter Jantine Annika Heij contributed this.

criticism

The EP received mostly positive reviews. On the one hand, the collaborations were praised. Both the collaboration with Jewelz & Sparks and the joint production with Sick Individuals were very much expected and were already positively received at the time of the announcement. Hardwell was also praised for the different directions in which he goes with his big room style. But less aggressive sounds were missed.

“In contrast to the previous EPs, Hardwell mainly uses more aggressive sounds in the third part. Neither a vocals nor a shallow Progressive House number he left room here. But through experimental aspects and influences from other musical styles, he still gave the EP variety and boredom is far from coming. "
