The Harley Street is a street in London's City of Westminster , known since the second half of the 19th century for the large number of doctors, who settled in this street.

history

Since the 19th century, the number of doctors, hospitals and medical facilities on Harley Street and the surrounding area has grown dramatically. In 1852 the well-known doctor William Jenner settled in the street. One of the first hospitals that opened there, 1853 was the short time of Florence Nightingale led establishment for sick gentlewomen . From 1845 to 1927, Harley Street was also home to the Governesses' Benevolent Institution , a home for old and sick governesses . In 1860 there were 20 doctors in private practice on Street, in 1900 there were 80 and in 1914 there were 200. In 1948, the year the National Health Service was founded , there were 1,500 doctors working on this street. In the early 21st century, there are more than 3,000 people working in the medical field in the Harley Street area.

It is believed that doctors were originally drawn to this area in London because of the large new buildings that were built here in the second half of the 19th century. The area is also close to major railroad stations such as Paddington, Kings Cross, St Pancras and Euston.

The area through which the Harley Street leads, belongs to the family de Walden and is managed by the company de Walden Estate. The land ownership dates back to 1715 when Edward Harley, 2nd Earl of Oxford and Earl Mortimer began developing the area. The de Walden family finally came into possession of the land through inheritance. Harley Street has also been home to many famous people, including Victorian Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone , artist JMW Turner, and speech therapist Lionel Logue .

In the novel North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell , the main person lives Margaret Hale times in Harley Street.

2016 revealed The Guardian a business model of anonymous corporations of the type limited to, were registered under the 2,159 companies at the address 29 Harley Street. The registering company Formations House is operated by the couple Nadeem Khan and Danielle Ardern. Until 2008, corporations could be founded without even naming a natural person . That is why the three companies founded in 2004, Corporate Nominees , Legal Nominees and Professional Nominees , still belong to each other. Companies registered at 29 Harley Street are found in all illegal branches of business that can be attributed to organized crime . The address appears thousands of times, especially in the documents from Offshore Leaks , the Panama Papers and the Paradise Papers .
