The Harperrig Reservoir is a reservoir in Scotland .
geography
The approximately 1.6 km long and 620 m wide lake is located in the southeast of the Council Area West Lothian on the western flank of the Pentland Hills . The closest city is Livingston, about five kilometers to the northwest . The 562 m high West Cairn Hill rises to the southeast .
The source streams of the Water of Leith arise on the slopes of the peaks of Torweaving Hill and Colzium Hill to the south . A few hundred meters before entering the reservoir, they unite to form the Water of Leith, which flows into the south-west bank and flows off from the east bank. The Harperrig Reservoir is the only reservoir that dams the Water of Leith itself. It can store up to 4.09 million m 3 of water, resulting in a maximum depth of 13.3 m.
history
Together with the reservoirs Threipmuir Reservoir , Harlaw Reservoir , Torduff Reservoir , Clubbiedean Reservoir and Bonaly Reservoir , which are all connected to the Water of Leith by tributaries, the Harperrig Reservoir is part of a system of reservoirs along the Water of Leith. It was set up in 1860 and served to regulate the level of the Water of Leith, whose banks were lined with numerous industrial water mills in the 19th century. To increase the capacity, the final 150 m long earth dam was raised to a height of 15.4 m in 1890. Since the work was completed in 2008, the Harperrig Reservoir has made a contribution to flood prevention along the river. Tower House Cairns Castle, dating from the 1440s, is located on the south-west bank .
