Harriet Monroe
Harriet Monroe (born December 23, 1860 in Chicago , † September 26, 1936 in Arequipa , Peru ) was an American poet and literary critic .
Life
Harriet Monroe initially worked as a poet herself and as such wrote the "Columbian Ode" in 1892, a poem for the World's Columbian Exposition on the four hundredth anniversary of the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus .
In 1912 she was the founder and editor of the literary magazine Poetry , which became influential in the following years with the publication of works by TS Eliot , Robert Frost , Vachel Lindsay , Ezra Pound and Wallace Stevens . In 1917 she was the editor of an influential anthology on free verse entitled "The New Poetry".
In addition to a collection of her own poems under the title "Chosen Poems" (1935), her autobiography "A Poet's Life" was published posthumously in 1937 .
