Harris Jacob Bixler

Harris Jacob Bixler (born September 16, 1870 in New Buffalo , Perry County , Pennsylvania , †  March 29, 1941 in Johnsonburg , Pennsylvania) was an American politician . Between 1921 and 1927 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Harris Bixler attended his home public schools and Lock Haven State Normal School . Between 1878 and 1892 he taught in Perry and Clinton Counties. He then graduated from Potts Business College in Williamsport . From 1892 he was based in Johnsonburg, where he worked in shipping. Later he also worked in the handicraft and banking industry. He became a director at Johnsonburg National Bank . From 1900 to 1904 he was chairman of the Johnsonburg parish council; from 1904 to 1910 he headed the local education committee. He was also mayor of this city between 1908 and 1912. From 1916 to 1920 he served as sheriff inElk County .

Politically, Bixler was a member of the Republican Party . From 1916 to 1925 he was their district chairman in Elk County. In the same district he was chamberlain from 1920 to 1922. In the congressional elections of 1920 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 28th  constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Willis James Hulings on March 4, 1921 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1927 . In 1926 he was no longer nominated for re-election by his party.

After his time in the US House of Representatives, Harris Bixler worked in the freight business and in agriculture. He died in Johnsonburg on March 29, 1941 and was buried in Duncannon .
