Thomas Cunningham Cochran

Thomas Cunningham Cochran (born November 30, 1877 in Sheakleyville , Mercer County , Pennsylvania , †  December 10, 1957 in Mercer , Pennsylvania) was an American politician . Between 1927 and 1935 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1879 Thomas Cochran came to Mercer with his parents, where he later attended public schools. In 1896 he graduated from Mercer High School . He then studied at Westminster College in New Wilmington until 1901 . In 1902 and 1903 he was a faculty member at the Mercer Academy . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1903, he began to work in this profession in Mercer. Between 1906 and 1909 he was a district attorney in Mercer County. Politically, he joined the Republican Party .

In the 1926 congressional election , Cochran was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 28th  constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Harris Jacob Bixler on March 4, 1927 . After three re-elections, he was able to complete four terms in Congress by January 3, 1935 . Since 1933 he represented the 20th district of his state there. In his time as a congressman in the early 1930s was the Great Depression . The first New Deal laws of the Roosevelt government were passed in 1933 , which Cochran's party was rather hostile to. In 1935 the provisions of the 20th Amendment to the Constitution were applied for the first time , according to which the legislative period of the Congress ends or begins on January 3rd. Between 1927 and 1934, Cochran was an American delegate to five inter-parliamentary conferences that took place in Paris , Berlin , Geneva , London and Istanbul . In 1934, he renounced another congressional candidacy.

After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, Cochran practiced again as a lawyer. In 1939, 1951 and 1953 he participated as an observer in the interparliamentary conferences in Oslo , Istanbul and Washington. Thomas Cochran died on December 10, 1957 in Mercer, where he was also buried.
