Denis Joseph Driscoll (born March 27, 1871 in North Lawrence , St. Lawrence County , New York , †  January 18, 1958 in St. Marys , Pennsylvania ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1935 and 1937 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Denis Driscoll attended the public schools in his home country, the Lawrenceville Academy and the State Teachers' College in Potsdam . In the years 1888 and 1889 he taught as a teacher in Potsdam. He then moved to St. Marys in Pennsylvania, where he also worked as a teacher until 1891. Between 1892 and 1897 he was principal in charge of the local public schools. After studying law and his admission as a lawyer in 1898, he began to work in St. Marys in this profession. He also volunteered in the Spanish-American War of 1898 .

After the war, Driscoll embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1899 and 1922 he sat on the state executive of his party; in 1905 he was even the state chairman. He also served as Mayor of St. Marys from 1903 and 1906. Between 1911 and 1936 he headed the school committee there. In 1916 and 1920 he took part as a delegate at the respective Democratic National Conventions . From 1920 to 1921 he was a federal attorney for western Pennsylvania.

In the 1934 congressional election , Driscoll was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 20th  constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Republican Thomas Cunningham Cochran on January 3, 1935 . Since he was not confirmed in 1936, he could only complete one term in Congress until January 3, 1937 . In 1935 the provisions of the 20th Amendment to the Constitution were applied for the first time , according to which the legislative period of the Congress ends or begins on January 3rd. During his time in Congress, other New Deal laws were passed there by the Roosevelt government.

Between 1937 and 1940, Denis Driscoll was chairman of the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission . He resigned because he had been appointed one of two federal court agents for the southern part of New York State to rebuild the bankrupt gas and electricity companies there. He held this post until 1946. Denis Driscoll died on January 18, 1958 in St. Marys, where he was also buried.
