Harrisia tortuosa is a species of plant in the genus Harrisia fromthe cactus family (Cactaceae). The specific epithet tortuosa means '(Latin tortuosus) coiled, abundantly with coils'.

Harrisia tortuosa grows shrubby with upright or later bent over or prostrate, dark green shoots that are up to 1 meter long with a diameter of 2 to 4 centimeters. There are usually seven rounded, somewhat humped ribs . The one to three strong central spines are initially red and later become almost black. They are 3 to 4 inches long. The six to ten awl and light-colored radial spines reach a length of up to 2 centimeters.

The flowers reach a length of up to 16 centimeters. The spherical, humped red fruits have a few thorns and reach a diameter of 3 to 4 centimeters.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Harrisia tortuosa is common in Uruguay , Paraguay , northeast Argentina and possibly Bolivia at low altitudes.

It was first described as Cereus tortuosus in 1838 by Christoph Friedrich Otto and Albert Gottfried Dietrich . Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose put the species in the genus Harrisia in 1920 . A nomenclature synonym is Eriocereus tortuosus (J. Forbes ex Otto & A.Dietr.) Riccob. (1909).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
