Harry J. Davenport

Harry James Davenport (born August 22, 1902 in Wilmerding , Allegheny County , Pennsylvania , †  December 19, 1977 in Millvale , Pennsylvania) was an American politician . Between 1949 and 1951 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Harry Davenport attended St. Peter's Parochial School and McKeesport High School . He then worked as a newspaper publisher. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . In 1946 he tried unsuccessfully to nominate his party for the congressional elections. In the elections of 1948 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 29th  constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Republican John McDowell on January 3, 1949 . Since he was not confirmed in 1950, he could only serve one term in Congress until January 3, 1951 . This was shaped by the events of the Cold War .

After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, Harry Davenport worked as an editor and bookseller. In 1960 he ran again unsuccessfully for his party's nomination for the congressional elections. He died on December 19, 1977 in his last residence, Millvale, and was buried in North Versailles .
