John McDowell (politician, 1902)

John Ralph McDowell (born November 6, 1902 in Pitcairn , Allegheny County , Pennsylvania , †  December 11, 1957 in Wilkinsburg , Pennsylvania) was an American politician . Between 1939 and 1941 and again from 1947 to 1949 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John McDowell attended public schools and high schools in his homeland. In 1923 he graduated from the Randolph-Macon Military Academy at Front Royal ( Virginia ). Between 1923 and 1929 he worked as a reporter for various newspapers in his home country. From 1925 to 1928 he was a member of the City Council of Pitcairn. Since 1929 he published the Wilkinsburg Gazette ; In 1933 he became president of the Wilkinsburg Gazette Publishing Co. Politically, he joined the Republican Party .

In the 1938 congressional election , McDowell was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 31st  constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Democrat James L. Quinn on January 3, 1939 . Since he was not confirmed in 1940, he could initially only complete one legislative period in Congress until January 3, 1941 . During this time, the last New Deal laws of the Roosevelt government were passed, which McDowell's party was rather opposed to.

In 1942, McDowell applied unsuccessfully to return to the US House of Representatives. In the elections of 1946 he was then re-elected to Congress in the 29th district of his state, where he replaced Howard E. Campbell on January 3, 1947 . In 1948 he missed re-election. Therefore, he could only exercise his mandate for one legislative period until January 3, 1949. During this time the Cold War began . After serving in the US House of Representatives, John McDowell returned to the newspaper industry. He died on December 11, 1957 in Wilkinsburg, where he was also buried.
