Harry Möbis

Harry Möbis (born May 16, 1930 in Hackpfüffel ( Sangerhausen district ); † August 31, 2019 in Wiehe ) was a politician of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED) and an officer of the Ministry for State Security (MfS) in the German Democratic Republic (GDR) . From 1966 to 1989 he was State Secretary and 1989/90 head of the secretariat of Prime Minister Hans Modrow .

Life

After primary school Möbis learned the trade of machine fitter and joined the Free German Youth (FDJ) and the SED. After completing his apprenticeship, he began studying economics at the Berlin School of Economics , which he graduated with a degree in economics. During his studies Möbis was at times secretary of the basic SED organization at the university.

In 1956 Möbis was hired by the Ministry for State Security (MfS), to which he belonged until 1989, from 1967 as an officer on special duty . In 1961 he became head of the organization and inspection department at the GDR Economic Council . In the same year he received his doctorate.

From 1966 to 1989 Möbis was State Secretary at the Council of Ministers and from 1967 State Secretary and head of the organization and inspection working group at the Chairman of the Council of Ministers. In this function he led 24 other officers in the special service of the MfS.

During the transition and the peaceful revolution in the GDR , Möbis was head of the secretariat of Prime Minister Hans Modrow from November 1989 to March 1990.
