An anchor is a tool with highly polished indentations that goldsmiths use as a base for driving sheet metal. The depressions are often bowl-shaped ( spherical segments ) or hemispherical (see pictures on the right). They then differ in the diameter with which they are marked. There is also a set of punches (also called indented punches ). Punches with a spherical end (ball punches) or with a rounded end are suitable for round recesses. A grooved edge or grooved edge, on the other hand, has groove-shaped depressions with a U-shaped profile (semicircular) or with an angular profile (square or triangular die). In this case, punches with a different shape or corresponding profile iron are required for the driving work.

A round piece of sheet metal can be inserted into a round recess in the anchor with a slightly larger diameter and processed with the punch by hammering it. This so-called deepening gives it a curved shape. In a similar way, elongated workpieces can be worked into a groove or groove. Depending on the material and thickness, preparatory steps may be necessary to avoid wrinkles. When processing with the punch, the workpiece can be given a polished surface at the same time (so-called pressure polishing ).

The anke usually has the shape of a plate (flat edge) or a cube (cube edge). On a cube edge, round and groove-shaped depressions can be combined, distributed on different sides. An anchor with grooves or grooves lying next to one another is also called a hinge edge.

Ankles usually consist of hardened or unhardened steel , more rarely iron or brass . Ankles made of hardwood are sometimes used to protect the surface of very thin and soft metal sheets .
