Hartmut Bärend

Hartmut Bärend (* 1942 in Berlin ) is a German Protestant theologian who, among other things, was Secretary General of the EKD Missionary Services Working Group .

From 1962 to 1967 he studied Protestant theology in Berlin and Heidelberg . Three years as a vicar and pastor in Berlin followed. From 1970 to 1973 he was a research assistant at the University of Münster and then became theological assistant and personal advisor to Bishops Kurt Scharf and Martin Kruse in Berlin. In 1977 he became director of the Protestant Youth and Mission in Bad Salzuflen and from 1998 to 2007 he was Secretary General of the Missionary Services Working Group in the Diakonisches Werk of the EKD.

From 1999 to 2011, Bärend was also the deputy chairman of the Lausanne Movement in Germany. He is also a member of the board of trustees of the evangelical association ProChrist , one of the works in the network of the German Evangelical Alliance, which has been holding special evangelization events since 1993. From 2000 to 2010 he was also a member of the main board of the German Evangelical Alliance.

Hartmut Bärend is married and has three children.
