His work is characterized by its thematic stringency and the rare logic of its development over more than four decades. Böhm's work is always owed to a clear system based on mathematical and geometric principles and which the viewer can understand at any time. The works achieve dynamic and sometimes confusing effects that are in a characteristic tension with the clarity of their structure.

Böhm has shown his work in numerous solo exhibitions at home and abroad since the early 1960s. He was also involved in the major international group exhibitions on constructive and kinetic art as well as light art.

In 2009 Hartmut Böhm was accepted into the Ingolstadt Foundation for Concrete Art and Design.
