Hartmut Oschkinat (born February 28, 1957 ) is a German structural biologist and professor of chemistry at the Free University of Berlin . He researched biological macromolecules by solid - nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy .

He is a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Biomolecular NMR and Structure .

Life and career

Oschkinat studied chemistry at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main . He received his doctorate in 1986 under the supervision of his doctoral supervisor Horst Kessler with the thesis "Analysis of the conformation of Cyclosporin in solution using NMR -spectroscopy: development and use of new methods". After a stay as a postdoc with Geoffrey Bodenhausen at the University of Lausanne , Oschkinat went to the Max Planck Institute for Biochemistry in Martinsried in 1987 . There he worked with Marius Clore, Angela Gronenborn and the Nobel Prize winner Robert Huber . After his habilitation at the Technical University of Munich in 1992, Oschkinat worked at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg. Since 1998 he has been head of the NMR-assisted structural biology department at the Leibniz Institute for Molecular Pharmacology in Berlin.

research

At the beginning of his career, Oschkinat worked in the field of solution NMR and made a decisive contribution to establishing multi-dimensional NMR spectroscopy in structural biology . After applications to determine the three-dimensional structure of soluble proteins such as a Pleckstrin Homology (PH) and WW domain , of which he also characterized protein-protein interactions in more detail and applied fragment-based drug development , Oschkinat shifted his research focus to the investigation of proteins by means of solid - nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy with magic angle spinning (MAS) . His research group was the first to determine a protein structure using this method, which is the structure of a microcrystalline sample of an SH3 domain . Since 2005, his group has been studying complex proteins, such as membrane proteins in their native lipid environment , amyloid fibrils and oligomers . In addition, he develops methods to solve particularly challenging structural biological problems, in which solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy can be used with particular benefit. This includes in particular dynamic nuclear polarization and proton detection by means of fast magic angle spinning .

Services

In 1998 Oschkinat was accepted as a member of the European Molecular Biology Organization . From 2009 to 2011 he was Managing Director of the Leibniz Institute for Molecular Pharmacology . From 2012 he was a member of the International Scientific Advisory Board of the Central European Institute of Technology in Brno . In 2013 Oschkinat was accepted as an honorary member of the National Magnetic Resonance Society ( India ). In 2014 Oschkinat received the Günther Laukien Prize , which is awarded annually at the Experimental Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Conference in the USA.
