life and work

Haruko Maeda lives and works in Vienna. From 2002 to 2004 she studied fine arts at Nihon University , Tokyo. She has lived in Linz since 2005 and studied painting there from 2005 to 2012 at the Art University Linz with Ursula Hübner .

Haruko Maeda works with the help of different media. In her painting she often makes use of the vanitas motif . Her pictures are shaped by European and Japanese religious iconography and the classic Western representation of monarchs in art history. In her objects, which, like her painting, deal with transience, the artist uses materials such as bones, ceramics, corals and textiles.

Haruko Maeda was nominated for the Cardinal König Art Prize in 2009.

In 2007 her short film "Home my sweet home" was shown at the Crossing Europe Film Festival in Linz and at the Vienna Independent Shorts Short Film Festival in Vienna. In this film from 2005, she addresses the longing for Japan and her homesickness for Linz.

Her work has been included in private and public collections, such as the Olbricht Collection in Berlin (Germany), the Runtak Collection in Litomyšl ( Czech Republic ), the Lower Austria State Collection (Austria) and the collection of the Nordico City Museum in Linz (Austria).
