Harvard Chess Cup
The Harvard Chess Cup (short Harvard Cup , German "Harvard-Pokal" ) was from 1989 to 1995 a mostly annual chess tournament "man against machine". The purpose was to measure progress in computer chess .
history
It was brought into being by the two American scientists, FM Danny Edelman and Christopher Chabris (* 1966), from Harvard University . The first Harvard Cup , as a team tournament according to the Scheveningen system between chess grandmasters and chess computers , was held in Boston in October 1989 . Present was world chess champion Garry Kasparov . The grandmasters clearly won 13½ to 2½ against the machines.
The Harvard Cup was held every year from 1991 to 1995 and was held in Boston or New York City . People always won, but the computers caught up and also won individual games against grandmasters. The final scores in detail were 12 to 4 (1991 in Boston), 18 to 7 (1992 in New York), 27 to 9 (1993 in Boston), 29½ to 18½ (1994 in Boston) and 23½ to 12½ (1995 in New York) ).
