Hasil Adkins (* 29. April 1937 in Boone County , West Virginia ; † 25. April 2005 ) was an American country - rock and roll - and blues - a musician , even if his music often called Rockabilly or sometimes Primitive Jazz is described. He usually appeared as a one-man band . He played guitar and drums at the same time and sang along with it. Adkins is often described as the forefather of the Psychobilly genre.

Adkins was born in Boone County and lived there his entire life. He was the youngest of ten children. Adkins was depressed and hyperactive . According to his own statements, he only went to school for a total of four days and instead made an early effort to pursue a career as a musician. As a side income, he occasionally sold or repaired items such as cars or washing machines.

Known as The Haze , Adkins claimed to have a repertoire of over 9,000 songs and more than 7,000 original compositions (although these numbers may be grossly exaggerated). He is responsible for founding Norton Records and has recorded numerous singles. Recurring themes in Adkin's work include love, police, death, beheadings, hot dogs, aliens and chicken. In interviews, he often cited Hank Williams , Jimmie Rodgers , Little Richard , Jerry Lee Lewis, George Jones, Creedence Clearwater Revival and Colonel Sanders , the founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken , as his greatest influences .

His best-known songs include She Said , No More Hot Dogs , My Blue Star , The Hunch , Beautiful Hills , We Got A Date , Chicken Walk , and Sally Weedy Waddy Woody Wally .

In addition to his work as a musician, Adkins has appeared in various films and television shows. Among other things, he had a guest appearance in the cult film The You Zombie Bastards! than himself. Adkins was also the subject of a Julien Nitzberg documentary entitled The Wild World Of Hasil Adkins .

In the late 1990s, Adkins appeared less often, but his music continued to enjoy popularity among music critics and other representatives of outsider music such as Joe Coleman and John Zorn .

On April 15, 2005, Adkins was run over by a teenager on a quad bike. The perpetrator was caught by police after running over someone not far from Adkins' house. Ten days later, on April 25, 2005, Adkins was found dead in his home.

Adkins had a strong influence on bands like The Cramps or the Flat Duo Jets . Adkins' cult status continues to this day and is kept alive by the increasing appreciation for outsider music and primitive rock and roll .
