Hasna Begum (2012)

Hasna Begum (born February 24, 1935 in Dhaka ; † December 1, 2020 there ) was a Bangladeshi philosopher and feminist . Until her retirement in December 2000, she was Professor of Philosophy at the University of Dhaka .

Life

Hasna Begum studied at the University of Dhaka ( BA 1968, MA 1969) and in 1978 became the professional moral philosophy with a thesis on moral theory of George Edward Moore at the Monash University in Australia doctorate . There she was the first doctoral student of the Australian philosopher Peter Singer . Begum has published numerous books as well as specialist and popular science articles and has translated several philosophical classics into Bengali .

Begum was the director of the Philosophical Department at the University of Dhaka from 1991 to 1994. In 2010 she was appointed to the Rokeya Chair of the Bangladeshi University Grants Commission and remained in this position until 2012.

From 1997 to 2005 she was a board member of the International Association of Bioethics (IAB) and she was a member of the advisory board of the journal Bioethics . Until her death she was a member of the advisory board of the Eubios Journal of Asian and International Bioethics (EJAIB).
