The Devil is a Part-Timer! ( Japanese. は た ら く 魔王 さ ま! , Hataraku Maō-sama! ) is a light novel series by the Japanese author Satoshi Wagahara with illustrations by 029. It has been published in Japan since 2011 and has been adapted as an anime and manga . The work, which is about the demon king who fled into the human world, can be classified into the genre of comedy and fantasy .

In one of the many small wars among the demons, the young demon Satan loses his parents and is left alone, seriously injured. Because of this injustice, that in a world where only the fittest survive, a low demon like him has no chance, he breaks down in tears. An angel notices this previously unknown image of a weeping demon and she decides to take Satan and teach him everything about the world. Equipped with this unique treasure trove of knowledge in the demon world, Satan decides to unite the warring demon tribes. After 200 years he finally succeeded and he rises to become the demon king.
After this success, the next step is to conquer the human world, Duck Isla. First he conquered the central continent Isla Centurum and built a colossal castle using magic. In the garden he plants a purple-colored jewel that he once received from the angel. Then the Demon King sends his four generals to one of the four other continents (north, east, south, west) arranged in a cross shape. The invasion is successful, with the exception of the western continent, where secular and ecclesiastical rulers put up bitter resistance. One day the heroine Emilia Justina appears with her divine sword and turns the tide for the people. First she defeats the demon general Lucifer, then two other generals sent to assist. During the subsequent counterattack on the demon king's castle, the badly injured Satan and his last remaining general Alciel must see their inferiority and flee through a portal to the earth of the present (around 2009) not far from the center of Tokyo in Japan. Here they find out that there are neither gods nor demons in this world and therefore they cannot easily refresh their magical powers. They quickly collect information about the world and start a normal life as Sadao Maō and his roommate Shirō Ashiya to save the remaining magic. In order to earn a living, Sadao is forced to work as a temporary worker in a fast food restaurant. He changed his plans for conquest without further ado and now decides to conquer Japan, whereby the first step for him is that he is promoted from a temporary worker to a permanent employee. Meanwhile Ashiya looks for traces of magic that she can use for herself.

After a year, Emilia and Sadao meet again by chance. She was also forced to make a living in Japan, calls herself Emi Yusa and works as a temporary worker in a call center. At first she seems to want to continue the final battle with the Demon King, but the appearance of several common opponents force her to work together temporarily. The opponents are usually made up of envoys from the Church of Ente Isla and angels who want to take possession of Emilia's sword. This is namely a fragment of Yesod Sephira, one of the ten fruits of the tree of life Sephiroth . While the humans expect great power from this, the angels pretend to have to bring him back to the tree so that the world of Duck Isla does not end.
Complicating the situation, a girl named Alas Ramus appears. She is the incarnation of another fragment of Yesod, which Sadao once planted in the garden of his castle. Alas Ramus refuses to return with the angels and instead merges with Emilia's sword and is henceforth a part of her. Since she also regards Emilia and Sadao as her parents, the two try to resolve their disputes as peacefully as possible for the benefit of the child.
In the course of time, the group around Sadao and Emi came across more fragments and was able to win over former enemies as allies. Like Lucifer (Hanzō Urushihara), who was believed dead, the inquisitor Crestia Bell (Suzuno Kamazuki) and Sadao's colleague Chiho Sasaki. For the conquest of the earth, Sadao seems to choose a similar strategy, with which he was already successful in the unification of the demon kingdom.
Duck isla
After the end of the war against the demon invasion, a phase of reconstruction and joint administration of the central continent by the other four realms follows. But without a common opponent, old hostilities swell again among the rich and a war for supremacy on the central continent and Duck Isla ensues. Coalitions are also formed with renegade demons and church representatives. Emilia's former comrades-in-arms Emerada Etuva and Albert Ende observe this from a managerial role. These provide Emilia both with information about the situation and with sacred energy in the form of inconspicuous energy drinks .

Books
The series has been published by ASCII Media Works in Japan since February 2011 . So far 22 volumes have come out. An English edition is published by Yen On and a Chinese edition by Kadokawa Taiwan.
A manga adaptation by the illustrator Akio Hīragi has been published in Dengeki Daioh magazine since February 2012 . The series has so far reached nine anthologies. A second adaptation as a manga by Kurone Mishima - Hataraku Maō-sama! High school! ( は た ら く 魔王 さ ま！ ハ イ ス ク ー ル！ ) - published from May 2012 to February 2015 in Dengeki Maoh magazine . It was also published in five volumes and, like the other manga, appears in English by Yen Press and in Chinese by Kadokawa Taiwan.
Anime television series
In 2013, Studio White Fox directed a 13-part adaptation of the material as an anime series for Japanese television, directed by Ryosuke Nakanishi . Masahiro Yokotani was responsible for the overall concept . The character design was created by Atsushi Ikariya and the artistic direction was with Yoshito Takamine .
It was first broadcast from April 4 to June 27, 2013 on AT-X , Tokyo MX and TV Aichi . A German dubbed version was released on DVD and Blu-ray by Anime-House in 2014 . The purchase media were released from the age of 12. The series is available synchronized via streaming on clipfish . In the Philippines, the anime was shown by the broadcaster Hero and Siren Visual and Funimation released an English version, which was also published on several streaming platforms.
