Hatnub (Egyptian Hw.t-nbw House of Gold ) is the name of ancient alabaster quarries in the eastern desert about 18 km southeast of Tell el-Amarna and about 65 km southeast of the modern city of al-Minya .

history

Hieroglyphic inscriptions and graffiti prove that the quarries were in operation from the reign of Cheops ( 4th dynasty ) until the Roman period . The Egyptian official Weni reports in an autobiographical inscription in his grave in Abydos how he undertook expeditions under Merenre ( 6th Dynasty ) to the quarries of Hatnub, among other places, in order to procure building material for the pyramid of the Pharaoh.
