Hatto Ständer (born January 14, 1929 in Witten ; † August 10, 2000 ) was a German composer of sacred music.

Life

Hatto Ständer was born on January 14, 1929 in Witten / Ruhr . His musical talent showed up early on. He played his first church services at the age of nine. At the age of 13 he became a student at the Musisches Gymnasium Frankfurt am Main , where Kurt Thomas gave him strong impulses through systematic counterpoint, composition and conducting lessons. His musical training was continued at the Folkwanghochschule Essen in the subjects of piano and composition. After graduating from high school, he was enrolled in Carl Seemann's piano master class at the University of Music in Freiburg i. Br. When his pupil he was a prize winner in the German University Piano Competition. He completed his organ and church music studies at the Musikhochschule in Dortmund , where he taught the subjects organ, choir conducting, Gregorian chant and composition from 1960 to 1992. In 1971 he was appointed church music director and head of the department for Catholic church music and in 1974 professor.

Ständer's compositions are mainly devoted to the sacred area. Numerous concerts and radio recordings in Germany and abroad made him known far beyond the borders of Dortmund.

Hatto Ständer died on August 10, 2000. The complete edition of his works in Edition Dohr includes not only the sacred works that became publicly known during Ständer's lifetime and which were composed in the second half of his life, but also the piano and chamber music works, the Ständer as pupil and student in one phase wrote for publication when a career as a composer was still being considered. Most of them are first prints that follow the surviving autograph versions of the last hand of the estate.
