As a main road one always is vortritt legitimate road in Switzerland and Liechtenstein , respectively. There are mostly non-directional thoroughfares there.

Main roads are always paved. The signs (direction signs, place-name signs) for the main roads are on a blue background. The main streets are numbered. The numbers of the most important main streets are marked on the direction signs (so-called “number boards for main streets”). The corresponding provision also exists in Liechtenstein, but it is not applied there.

In Switzerland, the Federal Council determines the main roads after hearing the cantons; in Liechtenstein, the government defines the main roads.

Disambiguation

The term main road comes from the road traffic laws of the respective countries. It grants the main streets a right of way over subordinate secondary streets .

Main roads can be owned by the federal government ( 3rd class national highways), cantons or political communities.

The canton roads or the state roads are to be distinguished from the term main roads. The latter are owned by the canton and can also be motorways , motorways or secondary roads.

In common parlance, main roads are primarily important roads in the road network; they are defined in different ways, see Hauptstrasse (general) .

Signage

numbering

On January 26, 1937, the Federal Council passed a resolution on the numbering of main roads. The numbers up to 155 were assigned. A gap was left from 48 to 60. In the event of revisions, routes were lengthened or changed, and further streets were determined. The highest number was 191, and the number 48 was awarded. On September 2, 1970, a "Federal Council resolution on the thoroughfare" was made with which the previous numbering was completely revised. The number of numbered main streets decreased to 32: 1 to 30, as well as 2a and 2b. The routes of the main roads 1 to 20, 25, 27 to 29 remained largely unchanged (H11 and H20 exchanged their numbers). Until today there have only been small changes to the processes.
