Heavy Metal in Baghdad is a 2007 Canadian / American documentary .

action

The film deals with the career of Acrassicauda , the only metal band in Iraq at the time , between 2003 and 2007. It consists of a total of four episodes, three of which were recorded in Baghdad . The last section from December 2006 is about Damascus , where the band members lived as refugees.

In addition to performances by the band, conversations with band members and views of Baghdad and the refugee camps in Damascus are shown.

background

Suroosh Alvi is a co-founder of New York's Vice Magazine , and Eddy Moretti founded VBS.TV, a broadband video network affiliated with Vice. Heavy metal in Baghdad represents the film debut for both of them as directors . In cooperation with MTV , a short article about Acrassicauda was made in November 2003, which was to become an article for the travel guide Vice Guide to Travel . Out of personal interest, and because some material had already been created for a feature , the filmmakers revisited the band in 2005 and 2006.

In mid-September 2007 the film premiered at the 2007 Toronto International Film Festival , and in February 2008 it was shown for the first time in Europe at the Berlin International Film Festival in the “Panorama”. In October 2008 the film was shown in various German cinemas.

The musicians were not allowed to enter the country during the premiere at the Berlinale, as the passports of three band members came from the so-called "S series". These were issued by the Iraqi authorities from 2004 onwards and have not been recognized by Germany since April 2007 because they are not considered to be forgery-proof.

Reviews

The daily newspaper Die Welt called heavy metal in Baghdad “a promising contender for the audience award [of the Berlinale].” The Junge Welt describes the filmmaker's style as “pop journalism under attack” and praises: “In good moments it brings a hard realism that has risen to the point of obscenity, which is sometimes ironic and amazes. "Heavy Metal in Baghdad" is a good film. "
