The house at Hauptstrasse 11

The house at Hauptstraße 11 (formerly house numbers 53 and 54) is a listed building in the core town of Volkach in Lower Franconia . It is also called Haus Haupt after the former owners .

history

As early as the second half of the 17th century, the Degen family lived in property no. 54, on which a previous building of the house was to be found. Adam Degen ran a linen shop in 1689 . Today's house was built around 1700 and could accommodate Adam Degen's business premises on the ground floor. With the coat of arms attached to the house, Degen gave an indication of the long tradition with which his family already lived in this exposed location next to the parish church .

A linen shop was still being operated in the property in 1710, but Adam Degen Junior, who was also the organist in the nearby St. Bartholomew's Church, was now in charge of the business . Adam Degen died around 1747 and his widow handed the house over to Georg Michael Degen, probably a nephew of the deceased. He came from a branch of the family that had settled in Würzburg . Jacob Degen owned the house in 1758, and Georg Michael Degen sat here a year later.

Georg Michael also managed to acquire the neighboring property with the number 54 and to convert it into an extension. With the purchase, the city increased the tax to be paid on the land to 1,374 guilders . Georg Michael Degen died around 1795 and his son-in-law Joseph Baierlein acquired the house after he had previously received Volkach's citizenship . Baierlein ran a department store on the premises, in which goods of all kinds were offered. He sold the house around 1820.

City councilor Jacob Frainier became the new owner . He was a merchant and owned several houses in the Upper Old Town in the first half of the 19th century. In 1843 Jacob's son Franz Frainier came into possession of the property together with his wife Amalia Niedermaier. The property tax, which was 5700 guilders, testifies to the large property of the Frainier family. Ten years later, in 1853, the merchant Kaspar Haupt bought the house and initially changed the facade.

A short time later, the Würzburg businessman Georg Leininger was sitting in the house, but he soon had to file for bankruptcy. Kaspar Haupt again emerged victorious from the auction and can still be proven as the owner in 1887. In 1890 the merchant Eugen Hillenbrand owned the house, in 1905 Wilhelm Sebastian Haupt can be found in the property. As a trained businessman, he ran a cut and haberdashery shop and also offered cleaning goods .

Wilhelm Sebastian Haupt carried out a renovation on the building around 1951 and wanted to adapt the house to the increased demands in retail . Today's arcade was created. The city of Volkach then acquired the house from the Haupt family in 1990. She leased the property to Elisabeth Sammartino, who set up a fashion and costume parlor on the premises . Today the house is listed as a monument. It is also part of the Volkach Old Town ensemble . Underground remains of previous buildings are classified as soil monuments .

description

The house at Hauptstraße 11 presents itself as a two-storey mansard roof with a rich rococo structure . As a late baroque building, it forms the transition to classicism, which is expressed in the house opposite, Hauptstraße 20 . Particularly noteworthy are the richly articulated window frames, which received ears . In addition, foliage ornamentation was attached below the windows on the upper floor. Above the main entrance a family coat of arms with two crossed swords Degen on a rafter on a blue background was installed instead of this rank plant, which by a citizen with swords as crest is surmounted.

The corners of the house were decorated with corner pilasters , the two floors are separated from one another by a surrounding cornice . The arcade towards the main street goes back to a renovation in the 1950s. At that time, the coffered pillars and keystones were also attached to the window frames. The rear extension was added to the property in 1769 and is now one-story. The courtyard entrance is walled up and was originally formed by an archway with base stones and a keystone with leaves.
