The house at Hauptstrasse 20

The house at Hauptstraße 20 (formerly house number 356) is a listed building in the core town of Volkach in Lower Franconia . The house was built as the seat of the Volkacher Juliusspital and housed a branch of the Castellbank between 1966 and 2019.

history

The oldest evidence of the existence of a house at this point is a coat of arms stone that was attached to Spitalstrasse today. It is a coat of arms stone of Prince-Bishop Konrad II von Thüngen , who was the first Würzburg diocesan to rule completely over Volkach. The year 1534 can be found above the coat of arms, which may give an indication of the construction of a previous building of the current house.

An inscription plaque in the inner courtyard of the house was decorated with the coat of arms of Thüngen's successor Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn , the year 1590 was attached here. Bishop Julius Echter promoted the official city of Volkach in a special way and began to found a smaller counterpart here from 1607 on the model of the Würzburg Juliusspital . The Volkach Juliusspital was "endowed and donated by twelve people" and was initially housed in the prince-bishop's office .

However, the space in the administration building quickly became too small and Echter pushed ahead with the construction of a more representative hospital building. A house sign on the upper floor of today's building gives the year 1614. However, it was not until 1698 that the new building could be moved into. The hospital housed “poor old people with pressure” who “couldn't get more bread”. The Juliusspital remained in the building until 1784/1786 and was then merged with the Dettelbacher Spital.

The house was sold in 1784 to the councilor Nicolaus Josef Meisner for 1000 guilders , whose family donated the new foundation of a hospital in the upper suburb . The family owned the house until the end of the 19th century. Franz Karl Meisner had large parts of the old hospital closed in 1812 and a new building built as a residential and commercial building in the classicism style. After his death, his widow Dorothea occupied the house for a short time before the hospital administrator Joseph Meisner moved into the house.

Only Lorenz Meisner, who had run a pastry shop in the house , sold the house in 1886. In 1896 Ludwig Ammersbach was proven in the house. At that time, the buildings were described in more detail. There was a spacious cellar next to the house, which housed a wine press . This gives an indication of the widespread custom in Volkach to pursue viticulture in addition to his actual profession . There was also a stable, a wooden hall and an inner courtyard.

In 1901 the bank employee Fritz Rauch bought the house. In 1902 his son Johann Friedrich Rauch (also just Johann Rauch) took over the property. He set up a bookbinding and toy shop on the first floor . His wife worked as a cleaner . In 1950 Fritz and Babette Rauch took over the house and continued to run a book shop. In 1966, through the daughter Marianne Rauch, the house came to the Fürstlich Castell'sche Bank , which set up one of its branches here.

description

The house at Hauptstraße 22 is classified as a historical building by the Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments, and it is also part of the Volkach Old Town ensemble . Underground remains of previous buildings are listed as ground monuments . It presents itself as a two-story mansard roof building . In the direction of Spitalstrasse, a central projectile with a triangular gable was attached. The house is a striking representative of classicism in the Volkach old town.

Typical structural elements of classicism are the consoles under the window sills, simple folding shutters and the triangular structures of the dormers. During the 20th century, the facade was redesigned in the course of the establishment of a bank branch. The typical cornices disappeared and were replaced by the four arched windows on the ground floor. The entrance, which was formerly on Hauptstrasse, was moved to Spitalstrasse.
