The Blumenthal house is a former moated castle at the entrance to Brachelen , a district of Hückelhoven from the direction of Hilfarth in the Heinsberg district of North Rhine-Westphalia .
history
The building was first mentioned in 1452 and at that time it was owned by Karl von Honseler. In 1484 a Reiner von Honseler was mentioned as the owner.
In 1542 Johann von Blumenthal bought the property, which was later named after the Blumenthal family. Johann von Blumenthal, bailiff of Gülsdorf, was raised to the nobility by Emperor Charles V in 1546 and was married to Elisabeth von Gruithausen. In 1600 the von Gruithausen family is recorded as the owner. The von Gruithausen family is an old noble family from the Netherlands, first mentioned around 1300. Arnold von Gruithausen was married to Elisabeth von Blumenthal. The transfer of ownership from the von Blumenthal family to the von Gruithausen family can be traced back to these family connections.
Building
House Blumenthal is the remainder of a formerly rectangular castle complex, the main parts of which fell into disrepair from the beginning of the 19th century. Part of the two-storey mansion with stone -framed windows from the mid-16th century and the adjoining hall building from 1658 in the northeast corner have been preserved from the former knight's seat on the northwest side . This is also two-storey, but its storeys are significantly higher than the older part of the mansion next to it. A small, richly decorated basket arched portal with a gable top provides access to the hall . The large windows of the hall building also have walls made of house stone, these are each provided with a flat gable, which is adorned with a pine cone at the top .
