House Teck
The ducal family von Teck , later Cambridge , was a branch line of the House of Württemberg , which married into the British royal dynasty of the Hanoverians and later provided a British queen with Queen Mary .
history
The line goes back to Franz von Hohenstein , unequal son of Prince Alexander von Württemberg and his morganatic wife Claudine Rhédey von Kis-Rhéde . Franz was made Prince of Teck in 1863 and Duke in 1871 ; a title that had been in the possession of the House of Württemberg since the late Middle Ages.
By marrying the British Princess Mary Adelaide , daughter of Adolphus Frederick, 1st Duke of Cambridge and granddaughter of King George III. , Franz managed to rise to the high nobility despite his unsuitable background.
The children of the duke couple were Victoria Mary , who later became Queen as the wife of George V , and their younger brothers Adolphus , after the death of his father in 1900 Duke of Teck, Francis and Alexander .
During the First World War , family members sided with Great Britain. After the British royal family had given up their German titles and changed their name to Windsor in 1917 , the Teck were also obliged to follow suit: Teck became Cambridge . Adolphus was also given the peer title of Marquess of Cambridge , and his brother Alexander became Earl of Athlone . The discarded German title Herzog von Teck was finally abolished in 1919 by the Weimar Republic.
In 1981 the last male family member died with the second Marquess of Cambridge ; the family therefore died out in 1999 with his daughter Mary in the lineage .
