The House of the Chamber of Commerce at Graf-Adolf-Strasse 47 in Düsseldorf was built in 1900/1901 for the Düsseldorf Chamber of Commerce according to plans by the architect Hermann vom Endt . The building was badly damaged in World War II and later rebuilt in a simplified form.

history

Reconstruction used by the IHK from 1951 to 1957

The organization, founded in 1831, was initially housed in the Düsseldorf City Hall and only had its own premises from 1870. Starting in 1900, the first own building was erected at Graf-Adolf-Straße 47, which could be moved into in 1901. Badly damaged in the Second World War, it was rebuilt in a simplified form in 1951 by the architect Willy Friederichs. In 1957 the IHK moved into a new building on Ernst-Schneider-Platz on the new Berliner Allee . The building on Graf-Adolf-Strasse had been used as a cinema under the name "Savoy" since 1958, where numerous film premieres took place in Düsseldorf. In 1999 the two cinemas were closed due to increasing competition. On September 27, 2000, the “ Savoy Theater ” opened in the old Chamber of Commerce . In the basement is with the "cinema studio" a cinema . The upper floors have been converted from office to hotel use and house a boutique hotel .

description

The model was the old Düsseldorf guild hall, according to which the importance of the building for industry, trade and shipping should be expressed through both the overall design and the ornamental design .

A double staircase led to the portal, the portal itself was shaped as a semicircular arched opening. The motif of the portal arch was repeated on the third floor as a loggia . The gable was adorned with three figures: At the foot of the gable was a male figure on one side - a symbol of industry. On the other side was a female figure with an anchor - a symbol for shipping. At the top of the gable was a copper figure of Mercury as a symbol of trade. Red and yellow flamed Palatinate sandstone from Bruchmühlbach was used for the facade . The construction costs amounted to 206,500 marks.
