Around 90 exhibits, v. a. Christmas cribs , and to a lesser extent also Christmas figures, are on display. The collection is divided into three areas: "Historical cribs", "Cribs from all over the world" and "Contemporary cribs": More than a hundred years old cribs depict Christmas scenes from a time when Christmas cribs were still set up due to widespread illiteracy Missionary character - the visual representation of the Gospel. Cribs from all over the world show nativity scenes that relocate the Christmas events to their own - foreign to us Europeans - cultural area. Contemporary nativity scenes include nativity scenes in the Moselle, Alpine and Oriental styles, but also box and diorama nativity scenes, simultaneous and block nativity scenes, as well as nativity scenes made of different materials (made of paper, glass in Tiffany style and Christmas icons).

One of the highlights from the collection is a figure of Jesus from the 18th century, which is also the spatial focus of the museum. Nativity scenes by Probst and Osterrieder and a nativity scene built by the author Stefan Andres are further highlights of the exhibition.

building

Entrance gate of the crib museum - art in architecture

The museum is located in a former winery that was restored by the Klüsserath nativity scene friends. Built around 1650, the three-storey winegrower's house with residential building, barn and utility building is one of the last preserved corner houses on the Moselle. During the renovation, Moselle slate and half-timbering made of the original material were used to emphasize originality and local ties.

The obligatory contribution to the “art in architecture”, which was designed and realized by the glass artist Andreas d'Orfey as part of public building projects, is also the entrance gate: it depicts the Nativity scene and other typical nativity scenes. It was inspired by the wine landscape of the Middle Moselle framed by a trapezoidal window, which brings the religious background of the crib museum directly into the design of the building with the scene “Christ in the winepress ” bathed in red .
