history

In the 19th century, the three-storey classicist Stern’s Hotel stood here from 1848 , where Richard Wagner stayed in 1873 and Fritz Reuter around 1863 . Around 1900 it was one of the leading hotels in Schwerin. Owner was u. a. Otto Reder (from 1906). The neoclassical conversion from 1921 was built according to plans by Willy Taebel . In 1923, however, the hotel had to close. In 1929 the Hannoversche Girozentrale took over the building and converted it.

In August 1945 the regional association of the Kulturbund for the democratic renewal of Germany was founded here under the chairmanship of Willi Bredel . The Schwerin station broadcast here from 1947 to 1949 . A renovation took place in 1950; the facade became simpler. The building was now the seat of the Schwerin Cultural Association and the National Front of the Schwerin district as well as other cultural associations. Exhibitions, concerts, lectures, working groups and dance events took place here. For a short time there was also a HO restaurant in the house. In 1968 the top floor with a small stage was used as an alternative performance space for the State Theater . Many highly acclaimed, often experimental productions took place in the TIK ( theater in the cultural center ).

In 1991 the city took over the cultural center. The Urania , a music and a ballet school and a restaurant were in the house. It is today (2018) u. a. the seat of the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania regional office of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung and the Ataraxia art school ; a restaurant and a beach bar are in the house. The Academy for Politics, Economy and Culture in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania was founded here in 1993, but its headquarters are at Mecklenburgstraße 59. The State Theater left the house in 1995 and the Free Theater Studio took over and played in the theater hall. The house was sold to the Schwerin housing association (WGS), a subsidiary of the city, around 2000 and then renovated.
