Back streets
The secondary and connecting streets were named Friedrichstrasse around 1840 after the Hereditary Prince Friedrich, 1842 to 1883 Grand Duke of Mecklenburg Friedrich Franz II (1823–1883) (before Kütergang ), August-Bebel- Strasse after the politician ( SPD ) (1840– 1913), Mecklenburgstrasse to the country, Alexandrinenstrasse to the Hereditary Grand Duchess of Mecklenburg Alexandrine of Prussia , Wismarsche Strasse to the Hanseatic city of Wismar and Lübecker Strasse to the Hanseatic city of Lübeck .
history
Surname
The street was named after the former arsenal , the arsenal at Pfaffenteich , which was built until 1844. Previously, the street was called Kütergang after the butchers who settled there and, after 1960, Wilhelm-Pieck- Strasse after the President of the GDR (1876-1960).
development
In the 12th century, the Mühlenteich , today the 12-hectare Pfaffenteich , was created by embedding dams . The water flowed to the watermill (also called Graefenmühle ), which was occupied in 1178 and operated until the 19th century. The water flowed from the Pfaffenteich through the river ditch to the mill and further along the road Hinterm Klosterhof (today Klosterstraße) to the Burgsee .
From the middle to the end of the 19th century, Poststrasse or Kaiser-Wilhelm-Strasse (now Mecklenburgstrasse) developed into Schloßstrasse . Hofbaumeister Georg Adolf Demmler built his living and office building on the corner of Mecklenburgstrasse and Arsenalstrasse in 1843. In 1844 came the dominant arsenal. During this time, the Pfaffenteich was straightened on the west side and the northern development took place. The buildings on the south side of the street were mostly built around 1900 and afterwards.
In the context of urban development funding , the old town of Schwerin was redeveloped ; In the middle to the end of the 1990s, the road was renovated and the staircase and green area to the Pfaffenteich were built according to plans by Bendfeldt and Franke, Schwerin. A five-storey multi-storey car park (No. 26 to 28) ensures that the traffic around the shopping centers on Marienplatz is stationary.
traffic
From 1908 to the 1950s, line 2 of the Schwerin tram ran through the street.
In terms of traffic, the street on Marienplatz is served by tram lines 1, 2 and 4 as well as bus lines 5, 7, 10, 12, 14 and 19 of Nahverkehr Schwerin GmbH (NVS) and on Arsenal- / Friedrichstraße by line 11.
