The Sony α7R IV (model name: ILCE-7RM4 Interchangeable Lens Camera with E-mount ) is a mirrorless system camera from Sony . It was announced on July 2019. The camera was sold for around € 3,680 when it was launched in German-speaking countries.

camera

The camera was launched on the market as the successor to the Sony α7R III (2017) and was praised as the "first really robust Alpha of the 7 series" (digitalkamera.de) because the housing is better sealed than that of the previous models. The camera has a BSI CMOS sensor, processor and software which together enable a resolution of 61 MP. It can take 10 pictures per second with built-in autofocus and continue that for a total of 68 pictures. Due to the relatively high resolution when it was introduced, the camera produces around 40 megabytes of JPEG images. In pixel shift mode, the RAW format can make an image 1.5 GB in size.

The Sony α7R IV has the following features:

  • 61 MP full frame sensor
  • 10 frames per second with active autofocus
  • Phase detection thanks to 567 points
  • 4K video recording at max. 30 fps
  • 240.8 MP pixel shift function (here 16 images with a total of 963.2 MP are combined to 240.8 MP, which results in a sharper image)
  • 2 SD card slots in UHS-II standard to enable fast data processing of larger amounts of data.

Pixel shift mode

The pixel shift mode takes 16 individual images, which are combined to form a 240 MP image. The sensor is shifted by half a pixel or, in the case of 4 images, by one pixel length. The use of a tripod is recommended due to the time lag in taking pictures. The image is calculated with the software "Sony's Imaging Edge".

Video recording

The camera records 4K film recordings at 24, 25 or 30 frames per second. Real-time autofocus, which focuses on eye movements, is available during movie recording. The bit rate of the recording can be up to 100 Mbit / s, whereby the XAVC S compression format is used.

Awards

The camera body was recognized by the Technical Image Press Association (TIPA) as the best professional full-frame system camera body in 2020 .
