The Sony α7 (internally ILCE-7 = Interchangeable Lens Camera with E-mount 7) is a mirrorless, digital system camera (DSLM) with a full-frame image sensor. It was announced in October 2013 along with the Sony α7R, which is intended for professional users . Its successor, the Sony α7 II , appeared at the end of November 2014 . The Sony α7 III was presented at the end of February 2018 .
Technical specifications
The Sony Alpha 7 has an effective image resolution of 24.3 megapixels and uses the BIONZ X image processor to process the image data. The camera housing has an E-mount connection . The lenses that can be used for this connection must have their own motor for the autofocus . The hybrid autofocus system combines a phase detection autofocus with a contrast autofocus. The phase detection autofocus has 117 and the contrast autofocus 25 measuring points. The built-in monitor and electronic viewfinder support live view with software magnifying glass and focus peaking . The electronic viewfinder has an XGA resolution (1024 × 768 pixels).
The cameras can be remotely controlled via a smartphone or other mobile device using the integrated Wi-Fi module . The recordings can be transferred directly to the mobile device.
Model development
α7 II
At the end of November 2014, the successor to the α7, the α7 II (internal ILCE-7M2) appeared. Two major changes have been made, namely a revised and faster autofocus and a five-axis image stabilization system that is built into the housing and so not only stabilizes every lens, but can also be combined with image stabilizing lenses. In addition, the housing has been designed to be more ergonomic and the range of ISO values has been increased (50-51,200 instead of 100-25,600). For the video sector , some functions of the Sony α7S have been taken over, such as the standardized S-Log2 technology for describing large dynamic ranges and XAVC-S video recordings.
α7 III
In February 2018 the α7 III (internal ILCE-7M3) was presented. The most important innovation compared to the α7 II is a 24 MP Exmor R image sensor with rear exposure , which uses a larger proportion of the incident light. Noise behavior at high sensitivity and contrast range are significantly improved.
Further innovations:
- Autofocus with 693 phase and 425 contrast measuring points, covers 93% of the image (taken from α9)
- improved image stabilizer (5 light values )
- Continuous shooting at 10 frames per second
- more 4K video modes
- larger battery (like α9 and α7R III )
- Two SD cards can be used
reception
Due to the mirrorless camera system , the camera housing of the α7 cameras is relatively small compared to digital SLR cameras despite the interchangeable lens system.

Individual evidence
- ↑ Sony (along with other manufacturers) counts the subpixels of each pixel, i.e. H. the red, green and blue channels of each pixel individually, and therefore specifies the rear display with 307,200 [pixels] × 3 [colors] = 921,600 pixels.
