The Sony α700 ( DSLR-A700 ) is a digital SLR camera from Sony and the second model in the α series . It was produced from December 2007 to July 2009.

It follows on from the Minolta Dynax series and can be seen as the successor to the Dynax 7D . Compared to its predecessor, it primarily offers an improved autofocus system, lower noise with high sensitivity, higher resolution and a modified operating concept. With this camera, Sony is targeting both semi-professional photographers from the digital single-lens reflex market as well as those switching from analog photography. The 700 has a CMOS image sensor in APS-C format (23.5 × 15.6 mm) with 12.2 megapixels. The handle sensor for the eye-start function is not installed in the version for the European market because of its nickel content.

The memory card compartment on the handle can be easily pushed open and not only takes a CompactFlash memory card but also a memory stick. As a rule, fast CF cards have a price and speed advantage compared to Sony memory sticks. In addition, you have to switch between the memory cards manually in the menu, there is no automatic or parallel storage.

The operating concept of the camera differs significantly from its predecessor. There is only one dial on the top. All information is on the back in contrast to z. B. Alpha 300 , 350 , 500, 550 non-tiltable 3-inch display (640 × 480 pixels) and can be changed there directly without having to call up a menu. This is made possible by Sony's so-called "Quick Navi" operating concept, the concept of which is based on the fn key (function key or separate confirmation key on a Sony Alpha D-SLR) and joystick operation via the main information screen.

There are separate buttons for the most important settings, with which the setting can be adjusted using the rotary knob. Atypical for current camera models, there is no live view function.

On August 24, 2011, the successor Sony Alpha 77 based on SLT was officially presented; this camera has been available since October 2011.
