Sony α is a series of digital system cameras from the Japanese manufacturer Sony .

The first model in the series was the α100 single-lens reflex camera developed by Konica Minolta and launched on June 5, 2006. The manufacturer thus led the division of digital SLR cameras with A-mount further from Konica Minolta, which had been abandoned beginning of 2006. Konica Minolta, like Minolta before, had used the brand name Dynax for this series in Europe , Maxxum in America and α ( Alpha ) in Japan . Sony uses the α brand uniformly .

A year later came the first in-house developed SLR camera, the α700, and further models based on APSC followed over time. In September 2008, Sony brought out the first full-frame camera with the α900.

In summer 2010 the system camera models α33 and α55 of the SLT series with A-bayonet were also presented under the α brand . They have a fixed, partially transparent mirror and otherwise largely correspond technically to the α560 and α580 presented at the same time. The SLT series established itself quickly and has many fans thanks to the α77 and α99, which were released later.

Over the years, many photographers have accumulated a large range of lenses from other manufacturers that are difficult to adapt to A-bayonet cameras because of their large flange focus . This is one of the reasons why Sony launched the α NEX-3 and α NEX-5 mirrorless system cameras with interchangeable lenses, also under the α brand, shortly beforehand in spring 2010 . The NEX used a new E-bayonet with a small flange focal length that made it possible to use almost any lens from other manufacturers with the help of simple adapters. A-bayonet lenses can also be used with an adapter. Lenses with E-bayonet (Sony calls the bayonet “E-bayonet” because of the flange focal length of 18 mm - English “eighteen millimeter”) cannot, however, be used on SLR cameras with A-bayonet. The mirrorless design also allows the cameras to be made small and light, and wide-angle lenses in particular benefit from the fact that the rear lens can be positioned much closer to the image plane, which leads to smaller and less expensive lenses.

In the course of time, many more Sony NEX cameras appeared (including α NEX 6 and α NEX 7), which made the name so well established that the customer saw the NEX series independently of the α series. That, in turn, was not planned by Sony and on top of that unsettled the customers of both series. Since 2014, Sony has been selling all photo cameras with interchangeable lenses (A- and E-bayonet) only under the name α, while the E-bayonet-based video cameras, which were previously also listed under NEX, have now been put into a separate group. In order to be able to distinguish between A and E bayonet cameras more easily, the cameras are divided into "ILCA" and "ILCE", whereby the last letter always stands for the bayonet type. Mark Weir, Senior Technology Manager at Sony Digital Imaging, confirmed that as of 2014 the name “NEX” will no longer be used.

Five-axis image stabilization was used for the first time with the introduction of the Sony α7 II . Since cameras with an E-bayonet now also have image stabilization in the camera housing for the first time, even adapted lenses can benefit from this. Furthermore, with the introduction of the Sony α7R II, the world's first back-exposed full-frame sensor found its way into the field of photography, and the internal 4K video function was now also supported with the Sony α7R II.

    technology

    Some or all cameras of the α series are equipped with the following technical functions.

    Lens bayonets

    The A- bayonet for the α-SLR and SLT cameras corresponds to the A-bayonet from 1985 already used by Minolta-Dynax and is compatible with all autofocus lenses of already published series, which means a large selection of lenses that is untypical for a new camera has the consequence. It has a flange focal length of 44.5 mm. Sony designates A-bayonet lenses that are only intended for APS-C cameras with the addition of DT.

    The E-bayonet of the α-NEX models introduced in 2010 has a significantly shorter flange focal length of 18 mm, which is why these cameras can be significantly more compact. Lenses for the A-bayonet can be used with the Sony adapter LA-EA1 (with drive for the aperture control); however, automatic focusing is only supported for lenses that have their own focus motor (marked SSM and SAM). Since the end of 2011 Sony has been offering another adapter, the LA-EA2, which contains a partially transparent mirror. With this adapter, an E-bayonet camera becomes an SLT camera with phase autofocus, so that every lens for the A-bayonet can be used with it without restriction. The successors LA-EA3 and LA-EA4 with enlarged image circle are suitable for small pictures.

    E-bayonet lenses, which also work without restrictions with full-frame cameras, are unofficially mostly referred to as FE bayonet lenses, derived from the naming scheme of the associated products (Sony FE). The designation of A-bayonet-only APS-C lenses as DT bayonet lenses, however, is not common. Electrically, full-frame and APS-C lenses with the same bayonet connection (A or E) are fully compatible, but full-frame cameras with an APS-C lens only display the correspondingly smaller APS-C image section by default. This can be deactivated using severe vignetting must be expected.

    Image stabilization

    Sony calls the function for reducing blurring blur Super Steady Shot or Steady Shot Inside . It corresponds to the antishake technology from Konica Minolta. The image sensor is moved with actuators in such a way that the camera shake is compensated. All AF lenses benefit from this technology, whereby the effect, in contrast to the stabilization in the lens, cannot be seen in the viewfinder, but only in the recorded image. With some Sony Alpha models such as the α230 , α330 , α380 , α450 , α500 and α550 , the image stabilization cannot be switched on or off via a switch, as was previously the case, but only via the menu.

    In the case of the models with an E-bayonet, Sony initially did without the camera-internal image stabilization. Optical stabilization is used in many of the lenses of this digital camera system . Adapted lenses with A-bayonet are therefore not stabilized, with the exception of a few models from third-party suppliers that generally stabilize optically.

    With the introduction of the Alpha 7II, image stabilization found its way into the camera housings of the E-bayonet series. It is a 5-axis image stabilization similar to that of Olympus and Panasonic , but Sony does not synchronize the image stabilizations of the camera housing and lenses (with the suffix "OSS" for "Optical Steady Shot"), but two of the five axes are in the Lens and the other three axes stabilized in the camera body.

    Sensor cleaning

    When the camera is switched off, the anti-static coated image sensor is cleaned of dust and dirt by rapid vibrations. To do this, the same actuators are used that are otherwise used for image stabilization. This method is less effective than ultrasonic generators specifically used for cleaning.

    Eye start

    An infrared sensor on the viewfinder activates the autofocus as soon as the photographer's eye (or another object) approaches the viewfinder. The function is partly combined with a grip sensor, which switches off the function if the camera is not held by the grip. The grip sensor is not offered in EU countries due to its nickel content. Regardless of this, the display lighting is switched off automatically when an object approaches the sensors on the eyepiece. This is particularly useful in the dark so that you are not dazzled when looking through the viewfinder. The scope of delivery of the α models from 2008 onwards also includes an eyepiece cover that can be used to block the infrared sensor.

    Live view

    The α300 and α350 first time Live View (from the manufacturer to a second image sensor , Quick AF Live View called) installed. This function makes it possible to see the viewfinder image on the display and thus to compose the photo without looking into the viewfinder. For this function, there is a small image sensor in the viewfinder above the exit pupil, which generates the live image for the display. In the penta mirror viewfinder there is a foldable mirror that diverts the image either to the viewfinder eyepiece or to this image sensor. Thus, the actual recording sensor is not activated and the mirror is not folded up, which benefits the noise and the autofocus speed ( phase AF , no contrast AF , which is used by most other manufacturers for live view). The later presented camera models α330 , α380 , α500 , α550 , α560 and α580 are also equipped with live view via a second image sensor, the α450 , α500 , α550 , α560 and α580 also enable a live view via the main sensor, which is an exact manual one Focusing is used (so-called MF Check LiveView ).
