The Theaterhaus am Lindenauer Markt or Theaterhaus Leipzig is a building in the Altlindenau district of Leipzig . As a house of folk art , it was the stage for the Leipzig workers' and amateur theaters from 1960 . From 1999 to 2018 it housed the Leipzig Off-Theater ( LOFFT ). Since 2003 it has served as the main venue for the Young World Theater .

history

The house was built in 1910/11 as a restaurant and hotel "Deutsches Haus" with an attached concert and ball establishment. The architect was Carl Fischer . The Hermann Quarg chocolate shop was also located here. After the Second World War, when most of the city's theaters were destroyed, the city of Leipzig's operetta theater played here. After completion of the opera house on Augustusplatz, the operetta theater (forerunner of the musical comedy ) moved to the nearby, more spacious Dreilinden house in 1960.

The house on Lindenauer Markt then served as the center of Leipzig's workers' and amateur theaters under the name “House of Folk Art”. Among other things, the cabaret Lindenauer Brettl played here under the direction of Lutz Mattkowitz, which was banned in 1983. From 1988 the Leipzig Sunday Club, from which RosaLinde emerged , met in the Haus der Volkskunst - the first meeting place for gays and lesbians in Leipzig outside of the church. At the end of 1993 the House of Folk Art was closed.

However, the city council decided to renovate the building and convert it into a venue for the theater of the Junge Welt and the independent theater scene (off-theater). The renovation of the facade began in the spring of 1994. However, the renovation was interrupted several times and dragged on until 2003. While the Association for the Promotion of the Leipziger Off-Theaters eV (LOFFT; this included the former Poetic Theater of the University) had been using the stage since 1999, the Young World Theater only moved in after the renovation work was completed and the Great Hall opened. The LOFFT moved to the grounds of the Leipzig cotton spinning mill in 2018 .
