The building by Maurel Frères ( English The Maurel Frères Building ) is part of the UNESCO World Heritage in the West African state of Gambia , which was included in 2003 with six other sites together as Kunta Kinteh Island and associated sites .

The building, located in the historically significant town of Juffure , was built by the British around 1840 . It was later used by the Lebanese trader Maurel, whose name it bears.

The reconstructed house, also known as the National Museum (North Bank) or the Juffure Museum , has been used as a museum since 1996 . Exhibits in the permanent exhibition " Voyage of No Return - The Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade and the Senegambia " are about the Atlantic slave trade and slavery in general. Since the release of Alex Haley novel Roots ( English " Roots " ) around the protagonists Kunta Kinte interest in being African Diaspora awakened. Numerous tourists who visit Juffure also visit the museum.
