Fort Bullen was a fortress at the mouth of the Gambia River at Barra Point near the town of Barra . The ruins have been added to the UNESCO World Heritage List as Kunta Kinteh Island and related sites .
description
The fortress was built by the British in 1826 and was intended to help with the garrison in Bathurst, today's capital Banjul , to gain control of the estuary. After the abolition of the slave trade , the British wanted to prevent other nations from taking slaves out of the region.
