Bonaire with the island of Klein Bonaire in the southwest bay (north at 11 o'clock) |
Klein Bonaire is a small, flat and uninhabited island in the Caribbean , about 850 m off the southwest coast of Bonaire and separated from it by the Rede Kralendijk strait . The island belongs to the " special municipality " Bonaire and thus to the Netherlands .
The coral island has a land area of approx. 6 km², is consistently flat and only rises a few meters above sea level . However, the island is a very popular destination for many tourists visiting the main island of Bonaire because of the intact underwater world in the directly adjacent coral reef and the clear water. Every year up to 50,000 amateur divers and snorkelers come to the island off the main island.
nature
In 1971 the Bonaire Marine Park was established with the aim of preserving the flora and fauna of Bonaire and Klein Bonaire; since 1997 the area has been an official nature reserve .
In February 1997, diving pioneer Hans Hass successfully wrote an open letter to the Bonaire authorities when the question of opening a hotel on Klein Bonaire was discussed. The project was then dropped.
