The Haus zum Regenbogen , Johannisstrasse 55 in Erfurt , is a residential and commercial building built around 1900, which was the seat of the Erfurt trade unions as the Volkshaus from 1925 to 1933 .

history

The four-storey house was built shortly before the First World War in the homeland security style and named "House for the Rainbow" after its predecessor. The ground floor houses two shops left and right of the central entrance and is with ashlar from sandstone clad. The upper floors are plastered and have two bay windows leading over two floors . The roof zone is provided with a centrally arranged dwelling , the gable of which, like the correspondingly wide part of the facade of the 3rd floor , is clad with decorative trusses .

In 1925 the house was acquired by the General German Trade Union Federation (ADGB) and converted into a people's house for their purposes. However, on May 1, 1933, the so-called National Labor Day , the NSDAP began to smash the free trade unions by first organizing a large rally on Domplatz in Erfurt, where around 50,000 workers were released from the factories participated. On May 2, the police and SA also occupied the Rainbow House . They arrested 44 union officials there and at other locations in Erfurt and drove them to the police prison on Petersberg .

In 2003, the Erfurt office of the German Trade Union Federation (DGB) put a plaque on the house to commemorate the event. The house was then renovated for use as a residential and commercial building.
