The Hawke's Bay Tribune was a regional daily newspaper in New Zealand based in Hastings . The newspaper was founded in 1937 with Hawke's Bay Herald from Napier merged.

history

Hastings saw its first daily newspaper, the Hastings Star, in 1886. The paper did not last very long on the market. In 1896, the Hastings Standard was a second attempt to establish a daily newspaper in the town. The paper was sold to William Whitlock and Alfred Cairncross in 1907 and when the latter retired in 1910, William Nelson took over the paper, founded The Tribune Limited , discontinued the Hastings Standard and instead published the Hawke's Bay Tribune . The newspaper house built in 1911 was damaged in the Hawke's Bay earthquake on February 3, 1931 , but parts of it could still be used for the publication of the newspaper.

The Hawke's Bay Herald in Napier , however, hit the earthquake hard economically. The print shop was totally destroyed, the paper initially accepted the Hawke's Bay Tribune's offer to use the print shop. This secured the independent edition of the Hawke's Bay Herald for the time being . But it was only a matter of time before the Hawke's Bay Tribune took over the paper . On January 16, 1937 the Hawke's Bay Herald and the Hawke's Bay Tribune appeared for the last time. Both sheets had previously merged and appeared as Hawke's Bay Herald-Tribune in the future from Hastings . The driving force behind the merger was William Arthur Whitlock , who returned to Hastings in 1933 , took over the business of the Hawke's Bay Tribune from his father, and after the merger of the two newspapers under Hawke's Bay Newspapers Limited, he had the Herald-Tribune in Hastings in competition with the Daily Telegraph in Napier initially continued as an evening edition. In 1999 the Hawke's Bay Herald-Tribune was finally merged with the Daily Telegraph to form Hawke's Bay Today .
