The Hayes is a stratovolcano in the Tordrillo Mountains in southwest Alaska .

The subglacial volcano was only discovered in 1975. It is located 2.5 km north-northeast of Mount Gerdine at an altitude of 2788  m below the eastern source glacier of the Hayes Glacier . The volcano is located at the northeast end of the volcanic belt of the Aleutian Arc.

Both the volcano and the glacier were named after Charles Willard Hayes (1858-1916), a geologist with the US Geological Survey (USGS) .

Known eruptions

Only a few eruptions of the remote stratovolcano are known. In the period from 3,800-3,500 years ago it had three large explosive eruptions, which produced a total of 6 layers of approx. 2.4 km³ each of tephra . The last eruption took place around 1,000 years ago. The volcano is currently in a dormant phase.
