Hazlehurst is a city in Copiah County , Mississippi , United States named after George Hazlehurst, a railroad engineer. At the 2000 census it had 4,400 inhabitants. It is the seat of the county seat of Copiah County.
Demographics
According to the 2000 census, 4,400 people lived here in 1,594 households and 1,131 families. The population density was 388 per km ². 1,752 residential units were recorded. The racial the population was composed of 29.3% white, 68.6% African American, 0.5% Asian and 0.6% from other races; 1.0% said they came from more than one ethnic group. 2.1% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 1,594 households, 34.3% had children or adolescents living with them. 36.5% were married couples living together, 28.0% were a single mother, and 29.0% were non-families. 26.6% were made up of single households and 13.4% had someone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.68 and the average family size was 3.20.
The population was divided into 28.1% under 18 years of age, 10.4% from 18 to 24 years of age, 25.6% from 25 to 44 years of age, 19.9% from 45 to 64 years of age and 16.0% from 65 years of age or older.
