Head Island

Head Island ( English for head island ) is a small island in the Palmer Archipelago off the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula . It belongs to a group of three islands to the east of Hackapike Bay . The other two are Pear Island and False Island . Head Island is 1 km south of Andrews Point just off the northeast coast of Anvers Island .

The island was first mapped during the British Grahamland Expedition (1934-1937) led by the Australian polar explorer John Rymill . It probably got its descriptive name, first found on maps from 1952, as an allusion to its shape.
