The Arheilger Friedhof is a cemetery in Darmstadt-Arheilgen .

History and description

A relocation of the Arheilger Kirchhof was necessary due to high groundwater . The Arheilger farmers were initially not ready to give up the good local arable land. It was not until 1820 that the construction of the new cemetery on Weiterstädter Strasse could finally begin. A wall surrounding the cemetery protected against further grazing of the area. In 1825 a funeral house was built. An expansion of the cemetery became necessary as early as 1840. In 1862 a new appropriate cemetery hall was built. At the beginning of 1900 the cemetery hall was replaced by a new morgue . In the following decades, additional areas were repeatedly acquired to enlarge the cemetery. Since the mourners continued to stand in the open, in 1964 - east of the old morgue - a mourning hall was built in the style of post-war modernism, which was very modern at the time and daring for the time . As a result, the old buildings were demolished. With the development of new building areas in the west of Arheilgen, another land purchase became necessary. Today the Arheilger Friedhof presents itself as a park-like area in the midst of dense buildings.
