Head over Heels in Love is a song by Kevin Keegan , the former English soccer player and soccer coach. The pop - pop - ballad was released in May 1979 as a single. The single became a top ten hit in Germany and is considered one of the few successful performances by professional footballers as a singer.

Origin and content

The song was written for Kevin Keegan by Chris Norman and Pete Spencer , Smokie's drummer at the time . It's a love song with a catchy chorus. The protagonist falls head over heels in love with the person he loves: “And it looks like I'm falling all over again / Head over heels in love with you.” Norman originally wanted the song himself in a duet with Suzi Quatro sing, but she wasn't interested. Keegan knew Norman after he was introduced to him after a Smokie concert in Hamburg in 1978 - the two of them drank a few glasses of beer together. In early 1979 EMI asked if Norman wanted to write and produce a single for Keegan; Norman agreed, and so the cooperation came about. Norman said:

“For Kevin it was more of a small experiment, fun to do something different. To see if he likes it. "

In the spring of 1979 the two recorded the song in Otto Waalkes' Rüssl recording studio in Hamburg, with Norman describing the atmosphere as good. Keegan was able to keep the tone and learned quickly.

Publication and reception

The single , released by EMI in May 1979 , contains Move on Down as the B-side, which, in contrast to Head over Heels in Love, is more of a hard rock song. The single Head over Heels in Love reached number 31 in the British single charts and number 10 in Germany - where Keegan was playing for Hamburger SV at the time and where co-author Chris Norman's band Smokie was very popular - and number 20 in Austria. The song also appeared on various compilations .

On June 9, 1979 Keegan presented his hit in the current sports studio at Dieter Kürten . Also in the BBC telecast Swap Shop he sang it.

Cover versions

The song was covered by Chris Norman himself as well as by Chris Roberts . Its German-language version head over heels in love with a text by Günther Behrle was produced by Ralph Siegel and was released in July 1979. On September 17, 1979 Chris Roberts appeared on disco on ZDF . On October 8 and November 12, 1979 , Roberts also presented the song in the ZDF hit parade , at a time when it was organized according to sales figures (14th place each). In the two editions before and after, he was named in 20th place, but was not on the show.
