The Heaphy River is a 33 km long river in the northwest of the South Island of New Zealand . The river has its source in the Domett Range and flows through the Kahurangi National Park before flowing into the Tasman Sea in the west between Heaphy Bluff and Heaphy Beach .

The Heaphy River was named after the English-born New Zealand painter, soldier and researcher Charles Heaphy , like the 78.4 km long Heaphy Track , which follows the river from the estuary for 11 km upstream .

The river is known among anglers for its brown trouts .
